Holiday News
The holiday season rolls on. Wimbledon is over with the usual disappointment. The Aussies have tied the Ashes series. Who will win?
It's also the time of year when the football season is underway and all fans hold that misguided feeling of optimism. Will this be our year? Maybe this time we'll avoid relegation....

In this issue you can see what one of our intrepid team is up to this summer, as well as where the IPS crew will be taking their holidays. If your holidays are over we hope that you had a very relaxing break. If you still have holidays to take we wish you a great time.

Innovative valve signalling
Previous actuator position indication equipment used various electro-mechanical devices housed in a standard switchbox. Frequently they have been difficult to seal against the elements and often they proved expensive to maintain.

Valve signalling

When required to provide signalling on ¼ turn namur actuators, IPS now fits the innovative M-VIP signalling device.

The M-VIP includes hermetically sealed reed switches and is rated to IP67. The parts are manufactured from PBT - a thermoplastic with excellent chemical resistance, good mechanical strength and a working temperature range of -20°C to 80°C. It will comfortably withstand the rigours of outdoor use or wash-down.

Installed in around 5 minutes, there are no cams or levers to adjust, and once fitted the M-VIP will continue to operate for many millions of cycles without the need for adjustment or maintenance. A plug and socket version is also available.

Welding machines to Africa
We recently supplied three Widos Type 5100 butt welding machines to be used on a unique Gold Mining project in Senegal, West Africa.

Our customer Plasweld Ltd won a contract with an Australian Mining Corporation to supply equipment and training to the local population (some of whom had no previous experience) in the installation of a new 42km polyethylene pipeline. The 355mm and 400mm diameter pipe carries water from the River Faleme to the mining complex, passing through many villages along the way.

Managing Director of Plasweld Jonathan Sykes commented "Whilst I have personally been involved in many projects in Africa, this was the first major award in the territory for Plasweld which was made possible by our proven experience in this field, our strong link and support with IPS and the excellent name of the Widos equipment marketed by them - The project is a major one in the region, providing training and social uplift to local communities as well as benefiting directly from the water pipeline as there are take -off points along the route to feed local villages”.

The Plasweld qualified plastic welding instructor and senior fabricator Andy Knight, carried out instructional training with the three existing teams of welders on site and also three additional teams to accelerate the installation and welding of the pipeline.  This brought the overall number of personnel trained to thirty. All training and instruction was carried out in full accordance with BS EN 13067 standards which are applied in all aspects of the Plasweld Plastic welding Certification schemes offered around the world. summer stroll
Sales Manager Kevin Curran celebrated the first day of his summer holiday by successfully completing the “Lyke Wake Walk” together with five friends.

Local farmer Bill Cowley started this now famous walk in 1955. He claimed that it was possible to walk the 40 miles from east to west (or vice-versa) over the highlands of the North Yorkshire Moors following open ground all the way except for one or two road crossings. To make matters even more interesting, he challenged walkers to complete it within 24 hours!

Kevin's team started at 8.00pm on Tuesday and finished at 5.00pm on Wednesday (17 hours walking and 4 hours of rest) and actually covered 44 miles as they went off route for 4 miles! It's probably going to be another week before any of them can walk properly again!

The walk also raised over £600 for Cancer Research UK. If you want to donate, log on to his charity page.

Unable to completely break free from work, where else would we go than to the Sewer Pipe Hotel in Austria? Not yet featured in the leading hotel guides, staying at this accommodation won't be a drain on our pockets (ouch!).

Kevin Walsh travels back in time when he's not a member of the IPS business development team. He and his family are keen members of the 68th Durham Regiment re-enactment group.

“Kevin (right) in full uniform”

This summer he and his regiment will be travelling to Holland to march in full uniform the 22 mile route originally taken by the British Army under Lord Chatham in 1809. The British landed at Walcheren Island with the objective of seizing Antwerp which was at the time under the control of the French Army under the command of Napoleon.

The expedition proved to be a disastrous, with thousands of British soldiers dying or becoming incapacitated with fever.

Kevin and his fellow Redcoats will be walking in aid of the Help for Heroes charity. Why not help? Log on to their charity page to make a donation.
