 The UK's "barbeque" summer is over. We hope that even if you were wet through, you had a relaxing time. At this time of year it's easy to be glum, but here at IPS we're celebrating a big award, and we're building up our strengths for new challenges in 2010. Despite the recession the cost of many plastic raw materials is rising. In some cases this is happening quickly and with large increases. PVC-U pipes, for example, are currently increasing by as much as 20%. Why should this be? In times of recession raw material manufacturers mothball some of their production plants. This has two effects. Firstly they can scale back production efficiently, but importantly it also creates a lower global capacity, driving up prices as materials become scarce. As the recession ends and demand returns to a more normal level, production will increase and prices should fall. Until then we will have to live with some uncertainty and the possibility of sudden movement in prices.  .
